Using AZCCRS as a starting point, Deanna gives students the opportunity to think critically about math through the iPad app EduCreations. After teacher modeling, each student was given a math problem to model and explain. As students drew and explained their thinking, their audio and drawings were captured by the app. Afterwards, students can watch their explanation and the teacher can too! Students love using the app and the teacher gets the benefit of being able to hear student explanations in order to help correct any misconceptions. Way to go, Deanna!
Mr. Hazen is the highlight of our first techie teacher spotlight of the 2015-2016 school year. In an effort to help his students begin to think critically (one of our 21st century skill focuses), fifth grade students participate in a discussion on Edmodo articulating real life scenarios that require an understanding of place value. Of course students are also learning to communicate clearly which is also a 21 Century skill. Kudos, Mr. Hazen! Keep up the good work!
This whole group activity required students to use Smart Notebook to create a tree map to analyze the plot structure of the story they were reading. Mrs. Cornelius methodically took students through the process, building the foundation for future use not only of the tree map structure, but also of the Smart Notebook application. You may be telling yourself that this would be unmanageable in your room. Just remember. You're the teacher! With the majority of students, if you make it mandatory, they will comply. Several students in Mrs. Cornelius' class had to use paper because they didn't follow the guidelines. Many of the students will be much more attentive to her directions next time they do this type of assignment! Thank you, Mrs. Cornelius, for being brave and diving in!
